By John Muto-Ono p’Lajur
Gulu LCIII chairman for Bardege division, Christopher Acire has been released on bail after spending three days in police custody on charges of sedition.
Acire was set free by Grade One Magistrate, Moses Angulia, Thursday. He was arrested on three counts of sedition after he said in a speech during celebrations to mark the 17th NRA/M day here that “UPDF soldiers were destroying people’s houses and grabbing their land”.
Police officer in charge of crime Crime, Stephen Kamanyire has since told Sunday Monitor “it’s seditious to excite disaffection against the government of Uganda”. This is contrary to Section 41(1)a and 42(1)b of the Penal Code Act.
The second count against Acire says he wants Ugandans to stop observing the January celebrations because he had that Ugandans are better off celebrating the day Museveni was democratically elected president. The third count states that Acire said President Yoweri Museveni has been residing in Gulu illegally because the president has never reported his presence to the Bardege division security committee.
