Headlines Ofwono insults MP MusumbaBy Kennedy LuleThere was drama at Parliament yesterday when Ofwono Opondo hurled obscenities at Bugabula South MP Salaamu Musumba.
I do not deal with vagabonds," Ofwono said before he was led away by Sergeant at Arms Ahmed Kagoye. "You are a stupid ass. Go f**k off.
Ofwono or "OO", is the director of Information at the Movement Secretariat.
Musumba closed her ears with her palms as Ofwono engaged her.
The incident happened at 11:20 a.m. in the corridors of Parliament as the two emerged from the South Committee Room where the Rules, Privileges and Discipline Committee had adjourned after hearing allegations of bribery against Ibanda North MP Guma Gumisiriza.
Musumba kicked off the exchange when she accused Ofwono of lying to the committee about Guma.
Youre a liar," Musumba said pointing at Ofwono. "You have told the committee lies.
Ofwono retorted: You woman, you just let your head off for nothing.
Musumba responded: You are a rumour monger. You are speaking nonsense.
Pointing at Musumba, Ofwono said: You are a hired mouth. You are not a member of the Rules committee. What brings you here each time Guma appears?
John Kazoora (Kashari), Guma, clerk to Rules committee A. P. Wabwire and a score of journalists witnessed the exchange.
The committee chaired by Tungwako Twarebireho (Bunyaruguru) had adjourned its sitting to 12:15 p.m. to allow Ofwono trace the letter written by Azit Hirani, the proprietor of Master Electronics who accused Guma of demanding a bribe of Shs 300m to cover an alleged Shs 600m tax evasion.
Ofwono had told the committee that he had just returned from Teso and asked that the hearing be adjourned to Thursday.
He explained that he would have to apply for the letter from the Committee on Presidential and Foreign Affairs where he tendered it on Dec. 4.
The committee rejected Ofwonos request and ordered him to re-appear at 12:15 p.m., with MP Adolf Mwesigye (Bunyangabu) accusing him of playing around.
The committee has to present its report to the House next week.
When the committee resumed, Ofwono asked for protection saying Musumba had accosted and insulted him.
Tungwako said Ofwono was protected before the committee and asked him to present his complaint to the Speaker.
In an interview later, Ofwono said he stands by what he told Musumba and hoped that the media quote him well.
Musumba said Ofwono was a disgrace to government and should be sacked. How can one say such nasty things and feel proud? she wondered.
I cannot answer him the same way because there would be no difference.
