Mande rebels to attack West Nile - Col. Mawa-Monitor 18/2/2003
By Karugaba Michael
The UPDF in West Nile region has been put on alert following reports that rebels of the Peoples Redemption Army are poised to attack Uganda from the area.
The Peoples Redemption Army of Lt. Col. [Anthony] Kyakabale had promised to attack Uganda during the Christmas season through the Rwenzori region but they did not, Lt. Col. Dula Mawa, the commander of the Rwenzori Mountain Brigade, said on 12 February.
There is a rumour that they now want to use West Nile region; we are there waiting for them, Mawa said.
He was speaking at a party hosted for him by a 2nd Lt. Wilson Kalyoma on 12 February at Nyabirongo Primary School in Kisinga sub-county, Kasese district
Lt. Col. Mawa has been the commander of the Rwenzori Mountain Brigade in western Uganda since its creation about two years ago but his area of operation has now been extended to West Nile following the PRA scare.
I am here purposely for this party but I will be going back to West Nile in two to three days, Mawa added.
Government has been alleging that Lt. Col. Kyakabale and Col. Samson Mande are training PRA in the eastern parts of DR Congo to attack Uganda.
Col. Mande has since denied the government claims. Lt. Col. Mawa warned the youth against being lured into rebel activities.
Whoever wants to bring war here should know that his/her life is short, he warned.
When The Monitor contacted the army spokesman Maj. Shaban Bantariza yesterday, he declined to comment on the alleged PRA plan to attack Uganda from West Nile. He referred The Monitor back to Lt. Col. Mawa.
