Awori agent goes missing - Monitor 18/2/2003
By Patrick Elobu Angonu
The family of a campaign agent for Mr Aggrey Awori in the 2001 presidential elections fears he has been arrested by military intelligence agents.
Mr Peter Christopher Ojur has been missing since 2 January.
I can confirm that my brother has been arrested, said his older brother Dr. Godfrey Stephen Egwau on Saturday.
Mr Ojur, a former Guild President of Makerere University, served as the director of international relations and youth in Aworis presidential campaign team.
He also served as a youth officer in the office of Vice President Wandira Kazibwe.
Army spokesman Maj. Shaban Bantariza yesterday dismissed Mr Ojurs alleged arrest by agents from the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI).
It is not true that the CMI is holding Ojur. If he had been arrested for subversive activities, the arresting security organisation would have produced him in court like it has been happening to other subversives, Bantariza said.
He said every missing person should not be linked to CMI.
Police spokesman Assuman Mugenyi also denied knowledge of Mr Ojurs arrest.
But Dr. Egwau, a gynaecologist in Soroti Hospital, said security sources told him that CMI picked up Mr Ojur at Busia border point.
He said government should produce him in court if he has any case to answer.
He said Mr Ojur had escorted his wife Nancy Athieno to Nairobi where she works. He said Mr Ojur was picked up as he crossed back into Uganda.
About the same time, other politicians from Teso were arrested and two of them were later charged with treason.
