Y Yaobang I am not sure about the statement Mr. Matovu made about snakes. I am not sure under what context it was. Political snakes have been on the East African scene for quite sometime, I remember Omweri in Kenya. Having said that, many governments world wide use animals to get out the intended results from those targeted, Where I live now, they use dogs. Where I used to live, they would pull your testicles, burn plastic jelly cans and let them drop on your body so that you can come out with as many lies to stop the torture for a moment. Dogs or snakes, in Uganda's case, are comparatively less brutal than shooting political suspects under the foot and tell them to go back to Luwero and fight for Museveni. Those shot in the foot, were the lucky ones to get out of Nsambya, Nile Mansions, Mbuya etc. The rest ended up in Namboole. Some people are scared of snakes (I inclusive) but it appears that some people in Uganda have put snakes to work. I do not subscribe to any form of torture but if non poisonous snakes can be used to scare captives to give information that would lead in the capture of criminals, instead of the alternatives of past regimes, we can only press on to get rid of snakes. If Museveni has given Ugandan an inch of democracy, let Ugandans press further, to get a foot, then a yard. Before you know it, new leaders will emerge to make every square mile of Ugandan territory democratic.
