Months After US 'Lightning Victory' The Hindustan
Times 4-3-3
- (AFP) -- Security in Afghanistan is volatile and
unpredictable following a spate of attacks against foreigners, and the
country is unsafe for Americans, the US State Department warned on
Wednesday.
-
- With US troops still waging periodic battles with
remnants of the ousted Taliban militia and Al-Qaeda network of Osama bin
Laden, the threat to all American citizens in Afghanistan "remains
high," the department said in a travel warning.
-
- "Travel in all areas of Afghanistan, including the
capital Kabul, is unsafe due to military operations, landmines,
banditry, armed rivalry among political and tribal groups, and the
possibility of terrorist attacks, including attacks using vehicular or
other bombs," the advisory said.
-
- On Tuesday, the United States expressed concern about
a recent spike in attacks on foreigners, including US aid workers in
Afghanistan.
-
- "These attacks have complicated the international
community's ability to carry out assistance activities in some parts of
Afghanistan," State Department deputy spokesman Philip Reeker said in a
statement.
-
- In particular, he noted a March 29 ambush in the
southern province of Helmand in which two US soldiers were killed and a
March 27 incident in which a worker for the International Committee for
the Red Cross was killed in Uruzgan Province.
-
- The United States remains fully supportive of the
International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) which operates in Kabul
as well as for so-called Provincial Reconstruction Teams at various
locations in the country, Reeker said.
-
- Wednesday's warning also noted a grenade attack which
injured two US soldiers in Kabul in December, a car bomb in the capital
in September which killed more than 30 Afghans and several other
assaults on aid workers elsewhere in the country.
