KAMPALA, Uganda - A minivan bus plunged into a swamp and sank in eastern Uganda, killing 18 passengers, police said Sunday.
The driver lost control after a rear tire burst, overturning the vehicle into the swamp 67 miles east of Kampala, Iganda District Police Commander Elisam Mugisha said.
A woman and a child were the only survivors from the accident Saturday.
"The scene was very ugly and very horrifying, and those who were there to see it will live with those bad memories," Mugisha said.
The 14-seat minivans which normally carry more passengers than there are seats are the most common form of public transport in Uganda and the rest of Africa. Reckless driving and poor maintenance are blamed for a staggering number of accidents and deaths on African roads
