PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has said the Lord�s Resistance Army (LRA) infiltration into Teso is because they have been squeezed out of Acholi by the Uganda People�s defence Forces (UPDF).
In a "letter to The New Vision", Museveni said the recently acquired MI-24 attack helicopters had enhanced the army�s performance against the rebels but progress was hampered by lack of transport choppers.
Gulu RDC Max Omeda was in Soroti to co-odinate the redeployment of some UPDF soldiers from Gulu to Teso. EEeeh! Did you read that?
�I know Col. Tabuley [one of the LRA commanders] so much and he is not a joker. He is a notorious LRA warrior and recruiter that must not be played around with,� Omeda said.
Masiga told The Monitor yesterday that he had received a letter signed by one Col. James Opoka.
The attack on Amuria came against the backdrop of reports that former Uganda People's Army rebels, who joined Mr Joseph Kony's group after their own group was defeated in Teso in 1992, are the ones leading the LRA push into the Teso sub-region.
The UPA was composed largely of fighters from the ex-Special Force, the elite unit of the Uganda National Liberation Army � the government troops under deposed president Milton Obote.
Brig. Muhwezi said that since Kony has spread out over a larger area, this is the moment to defeat him.
The Soroti Resident District Commissioner, Mr Edward Masiga, told The Monitor that the rebels had been beaten back by 6 p.m.
The Usuk MP, Mr Isaiah Imulet, told The Monitor that he feared the rebels could attack Usuk any time.
The Amuria MP, Mr Ben Etonu, later also confirmed that the rebels had been flushed out of the town.
The MP also claimed that the rebels had set up a training camp at Aojakitoi in Amuria County.
�The rebels are moving towards Kaberamaido with intention to cut off the Soroti-Lira road. They are also moving towards Wera with the intention to cut off the Soroti-Moroto road,� lamented the Kumi MP, Mr Patrick Amuriat who said he had just received a phone call.
Nsibambi and the National Political Commissar, Dr Crispus Kiyonga, admitted that there are weaknesses in the army, � as there are in Cabinet and Parliament.�

MPs; Mr Jack Sabiiti (Rukiga), Capt. Charles Byaruhanga (Kibaale) and Charles Angiro Gutumoi (Erute North) blamed the unending war on the lack of a clear law that governs recruitment, deployment, promotions and welfare of the soldiers.
