LETTER TO THE EDITOR - NEW VISION - 21/6/2003
Maj-Gen Kazini insensitive and not serious at all!
SIR Your story in yesterdays New Vision, of Maj-Gen James Kazini purchasing three vehicles at a cost of sh405,380,000 revealed to me the fundamental problem that is preventing our country from stabilising.
We have not yet reached the stage of thinking and behaving in this country as a people! The fact that the army commander can spend so much money for his personal comfort, while foot soldiers and other hapless Ugandans are having it rough with Kony and his thugs shows a total lack of seriousness and sensitivity over the situation in the country. Yet the rest of the population is stretched to the limit economically in a bid to support the activities of the army. That could perhaps explain why some people believe that the army is not really handling the problem of insurgency and thuggery in the country with the seriousness it deserves. For, how do you explain the army commander dreaming about a well-padded vehicle for himself, instead of dreaming about bullet-proof vests
for his foot soldiers? The army commander is totally wrong to compare his situation with that of his Tanzanian counterpart, for in Tanzania there are no rebels and thugs marauding the countryside, mutilating people with wanton abandon and posting the body parts as mail! I strongly urge the new army commander, Maj-Gen Aronda Nyakairima, to sell the Range Rover and purchase for himself a modest Land Rover that can actually drive in the bushes and chase after those mad beasts that pose as rebels.
