THE Government has instituted a probe into an institute run by presidential assistant on political affairs Maj. Kakooza Mutale.
The Nakasongola-based Matembe Institute of Technology has been at the centre of allegations of child abuse and exploitation.
Education state minister Namirembe Bitamazire said her ministry would investigate the institute and report to Parliament within a month. She was responding to concerns by Pader woman MP Santa Okot that the institute was luring desperate children from Acholi sub-region with promises of scholarships only to turn them into labourers.
Sources said the school was a project of the Kalangala Action Plan, a para-military mobilisation group which was active during the 2001 general elections.
Okot said the children till the land from 5:00am till evening and feed on only porridge.
�After digging they are taken for military drills and something called chipindi cha utamaduni,�
Okot said. She said 11 students escaped last week and talked of the abuse.
They were kept at the Central Police Station. They said 160 Acholi children were still at the school, which Kyadondo East MP Sitenda Ssebalu defended.
Former ethics minister Miria Matembe said, �We do not know how many died. We�re not serious.�
