Blame leaders, not tribes -New Vision 18th July 2003
By Richard Otim
THE First Deputy Premier, Lt. Gen. Moses Ali, has urged Ugandans to stop blaming some tribes for atrocities committed by past leaders. He said there was a growing tendency by some politicians to instigate animosity against those who belong to tribes of past leaders.
He said such a habit in a country that is healing from wounds of past political persecution would only prolong the insurgency currently in some parts of the country.
Stop this habit of blaming people from West Nile because of Amins mistakes, or those from (Milton) Obotes tribe because of his mistakes, or the Banyakole because of Museveni, Ali said.
Addressing residents of Soroti town at the Independence Gardens on Monday Ali said some people, who had fled the country when the past governments were overthrown, had been denied their property for sharing a tribe with the leaders.
Ali was in Teso to assess the Lords Resistance Army rebel-related atrocities. He
said the Nubians in Teso had been subjected to persecution because of Amins mistakes.
Why do you deny these people their property! If the Indians were given back their property why not them? he asked.
He said he had directed the district to investigate cases of such persecution and take action.
