African countries pull together on disease control

| Charles Wendo 18 July 2003 Source: The Lancet Six countries in the Africa Great Lakes region have agreed to cooperate on the prevention and control of diseases that can be prevented by vaccination. The agreement, signed by health ministers of the six nations in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, encourages countries to share epidemic information across borders, harmonise treatment policies and protocols and standardise laboratory procedures and techniques. It also agrees to coordinate mass vaccinations activities and to implement joint activities aimed at eliminating measles, vitamin A deficiencies, and maternal and neonatal tetanus.
