200 In Teso Flee to Mukono

AT least 200 internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Teso have taken refuge in Njeru town in Mukono district.
District councillor Sam Kiganda, and other councillors, on Saturday visited the IDPs to assess their living conditions.
They are being accommodated in groups of 10 to 25 in slum houses offered by the LCs of Naava, Bukaya and UEB zones.
Lower Naava LC1 chairman Henry Iyamba said, "We could not do much besides offering them accommodation."
A few others are staying with relatives and friends.
The displaced are mostly from Morungatuny and Orunga sub-counties in Katakwi district.
At least 120 of them are school pupils, including P.7 candidates.
Some narrated their escape and journey. They lack food, clothing, bedding, proper shelter, medical treatment and safe drinking water.
They fetch water from River Nile.
Six-year-old Aiko said she had stayed atop a tree for five days before she joined the group. She said she did not know the whereabouts of her parents.
Kiganda said he had written to the Minister of Disaster Preparedness and Refugees over the matter.
"I appealed to the Government for relief assistance, for there might be a cholera outbreak due to squalid living conditions," Kiganda said.
The commissioner in the ministry of Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, Carlos Twesigomwe, said the ministry was not aware of the IDPs plight in Njeru.
