Netters   Even if I do not take the pollution problem in Kampala into consideration. Can some one out there explain to me why we have this factory in Kampala or even in Buganda for that matter? Since when did Buganda start to produce Tobacco to warrant a factory? Those are the silly decisions made by silly governments ruling silly people. "The Ffe kasita Twebaka crap" The removal of that plant to the Regions that need them like West Nile will save the roads, for you will not have to truck Tobacco every day, it will create jobs to the Western Nilers, who by the way happen to be Ugandans as well, you will create even a larger spin off jobs again to West Nile, and you will cut off the massive daily travelling from Arua to Kampala with brief case business operators, you will release the Kampala land for a better and higher investment, you will be enticed to pull the Electricity line from Gulu to Arua for it will be then worth the investment, You will develop the Arua air-strip for the exportation directly from Arua to any where in the world, that will mean an expansion of agriculture, for then Arua people can export them by air with out trucking them to Kampala, you will need more and better housing for those employed will need housing. Makerere and other universities' graduates who get degrees and end up in Kampala Taxi park can apply for jobs in Arua to work as accountants, engineers, researchers, Bankers you name it. You will cut down on the population in Kampala for most of those living in Mizigo are doing so to access the bread and butter stuck in Kampala, then you will start to think of re-developing Kampala with its original and planed population of 50,000. I can go on and on and make this a posting by its self. But to achieve this you must have a government with critical thinkers. But by the looks on the kind of people we have, The Ssemakula's who are waiting for their independence day as October 8th,  God is telling me that I will be asking for too much. Amazing how we were forced to be born in very strange days with very strange people indeed. Very strange.   Em Toronto -------------------------------- Medic wants tobacco firm out of the city By Halima Abdallah September 22, 2003 KAMPALA - Doctors want the factory of the British American Tobacco Uganda Limited (Batu) moved from Kampala. The President of the Uganda Medical Association, Dr Margaret Mungherera, said on Friday that it would reduce air pollution. Mungherera also called for the banning of smoking in public places. Mungherera was speaking at a meeting that discussed draft regulations prohibiting smoking in public places at Hotel Equatoria in Kampala. The National Environmental Management Authority (Nema) prepared the draft regulations. Nemas's action stems from a court order of December 2002, which declared smoking in public places, a violation of the non-smokers' rights. Court ordered Nema to make regulations protecting non-smokers by December 2003. The draft regulations provide for on-spot fines for offenders (smokers) and owners of public places. For habitual offenders, the licenses would be cancelled. The doctor said that tobacco is a substance of abuse whose consumption and related problems have increased 10 times. Mungherera said that 525 children die daily in hospitals due to respiratory related complications, of which 10 percent are from tobacco. She said that sudden infant death syndromes have been traced to tobacco. She said that 13 percent of children between 10 and 13 are already in the smoking habit, half of them girls. Mungherera said that tobacco contains nicotine, which is addictive. She said that children must be protected from secondhand smoking even at home. "Tobacco causes 13 different kinds of cancer in a smoker, but it takes Shs 800,000 [a year] to treat only one patient with lung cancer," Mungherera said. The message however, did not go down well with Batu officials. Batu's head of Corporate and Regulations, Mr Henry Rugamba, said that people are scared of smoking because of medical claims.
