I am writing to reveal some dirty linen in one of the countrys key institutions - the Post Office.
This is not news to those familiar with Ugandas postal system. Many a letter and parcel destined for loved ones, for business partners and even for the government, has been pilfered by someone with long fingers in the dungeons of the Post Office.
I recently sent my mother a parcel containing some family photographs via the Post and someone decided that they needed them more than their intended recipient. Repeated calls to the Post Office yielded only laughter from the other end of the line and huge overseas bills for me.
Of course, there will never be any compensation; no explanation; no feedback. Nothing.
The role of the Post Office is at the heart of every modern society.
Minimising postal theft and fraud is part and parcel of those acceptable standards of service, unless of course, the managers of the Post Office want us to believe otherwise.
I dare the head of the Post Office, as well as the ministry in charge, to tell the citizens how many packages go missing or tampered with every monthx. Who are the thieves and how far up the management ladder does the theft go? Or does management not even care at all?
Dr. Alex Mutebi,
Singapore.
