AT least five people were confirmed killed, several others injured and about 60 abducted when LRA rebels attacked Bar-Ariyo market in Ngai sub-county, in Apac district on Wednesday.
Bar- Ariyo is about eight miles south of Lalogi sub-county in Omoro county.
It is mostly attended on every Wednesday by hundreds of traders and buyers from Lira, Apac and Gulu district.
The army spokesman in northern Uganda, Lt. Paddy Ankunda, said yesterday three civilians and two local defence unit men were killed.
He said a number of people were abducted but he did not the number.
"We will kill them and rescue the abductees. We have dispatched a force there to pursue the group and I hope there will be contact at the end of the day," he said
Local security sources and survivors who spoke to The New Vision on telephone yesterday said the rebels struck the heavily populated market at about 3:30pm emerging in three small groups via the Lira-Gulu railway line on the northern side.
Apac Resident District Commissioner Drani Dradriga, who is in Kampala, confirmed the attack but had no details.
An Eyewitness who identified himself only as Charles, 37, told The New Vision that he saw several bodies of people killed on spot.
He said two of the dead were identified only as Odaga, a renowned businessman based at Bar-Ariyo market, and Ogwang, also from Bar-Ariyo village.
Charles said other dead unidentified included two women.
