MAAFA 2003
BLACK AFRICAN HOLOCAUST COMMEMORATION
SEPTEMBER 25 to OCTOBER 31. 2003
SARGENT JOHNSON GALLERY
The Sargent Johnson Gallery and the African American Art & Culture
Complex
(AAACC) is pleased to present the exhibition Maafa 2003: Black African
Holocaust Commemoration, September 25 through October 31, 2003. Maafa
is a
Kiswahili term for disaster, calamity or terrible occurrence. This term
has
been used to describe the TransAtlantic Slave Trade Middle Passage.
The exhibition will feature photography, painting, and mixed-media
installations that serve to commemorate and memorialize the 100 million
ancestors lost in the horror of the Middle Passage as well as engage
viewers in a healing from the effects that slavery and racism has had
on
the minds, hearts, bodies, and spirits of people of African descent and
our
global community as a whole.
Salifu Mohammed's paintings convey the soul's journey towards final
reunion
with the ancestors. Photographs by Kimara capture the mystical renewal
of
the spirit found in the Maafa Commermation ritual that's performed
yearly
at Ocean Beach in mid-October. Inspired by and created for Sara
(Saartjie)
Baartman (Venus Hottentot) who was stolen from her homeland, Cape Town,
South Africa, and brought to Europe as a caged human spectacle, Karen
Carraway's mixed-media installations and altar shaped like the African
continent speaks to the continual subjugation of the Black female body
over
the course of history.
