Two people were on Tuesday killed in an ambush by the Lord's Resistance Army rebels on Lira - Soroti highway.

Two others were critically injured. Soroti Resident District Commissioner, Mr Edward Masiga, confirmed the attack.

He said it took place at Ousia Primary School, near Katine town, 20 kms north of Soroti town.

He said a tonne boy of the lorry that was ambushed, Mr Ali Bebbi, identified the dead, only as Mr Kayemba and Ms Esther.

The driver Mr Yahya Hassan was admitted with bullet wounds in Soroti Hospital. The Lira-Soroti road has been a scene of several rebel attacks in recent weeks.

"The rebels shot from behind the vehicle, moments later we saw a number of them running towards the vehicle - shooting, but the driver accelerated before he was shot in the left leg." Ali told The Monitor in Soroti town.

He said the rebels numbered about 30 and were dressed in uniform similar to that of the UPDF.

Masiga had earlier told The Monitor, in his office, that the rebels had killed one person in the nearby Acuna village and wounded three others, on Monday.
