KAMPALA Vice President Gilbert Bukenya wants a national day dedicated to praying for peace in Uganda. God loves us all and he created mankind to live in peace, Prof. Bukenya said in Kampala yesterday. I feel sorry for every Ugandan who does not enjoy peace because of the insecurity in some parts of the country. With God anything can be possible and that is why I propose a national prayer [day] to end these barbaric wars. Bukenya, accompanied by his wife, Margaret, was speaking at the occasion to mark the 37th annual Kampala Archdiocesan Day at Rubaga Cathedral yesterday. He said he would ensure that every Ugandan enjoys the national cake. He said he minds about the poor more than the rich. He said he will make sure that every Ugandan is better off. He said some people have become indifferent to the wars in the north and eastern parts of Uganda yet they too could be affected in the long run. Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala said that Catholics support Bukenyas crusade against poverty. Wamala conveyed the popes message. He told the congregation that the popes health is improving. The pope sent greetings to all Ugandans and he praises Christs mercy for keeping him alive, Wamala, who was in Rome recently to mark the popes 25th anniversary on the throne, said. He said that though the pope is disabled, he is in good health. The pope does all the work while seated because he believes that disability is not inability. At times he stammers or fails to talk when addressing a big congregation but he is healthy and cracks jokes, Wamala said. At one time when asked how he was feeling he said he had not yet read newspapers to know, Wamala said causing laughter. |
