SOROTI Police on Monday dispersed a consultative meeting called by Teso MPs. The MPs reacted angrily.
They said the police action is a veiled attempt by government to prolong the suffering of the people in the north and northeast of Uganda.
The Teso Parliamentary Group convened the meeting at Eneku Resort Village in Soroti town.
The MPs said government is desperately trying to sabotage their investigation into the worsening humanitarian situation in the internally displaced persons camps in Teso in the face of governments failure to restore peace and security in the area.
The MPs were discussing, among other things, the general security situation and the distribution of relief aid in Teso before security operatives stormed the meeting.
The District Police Commander, Mr Patrick Awai, ordered the lawmakers to vacate the area. He accused the MPs of holding an illegal meeting.
I have come to stop you from proceeding with this meeting because it has something somewhere which is wrong, he said.
The lawmakers told Awai that they do not need anyones permission to call a meeting.
They said they are on recess and it is normal for them to consult with their constituents.
MPs are consulting in Acholi, Lango and elsewherewhat is wrong with Teso? Mr Amuriat Oboi (Kumi) asked.
Earlier on, Oboi had hinted that he summoned the meeting to explore ways of ending the rebel insurgency in Teso.
The MPs are angry with government and WFP for failing to deliver an estimated 1,000 metric tonnes of maize grain to people in camps. They claim the maize is rotting in stores yet people in camps are dying of hunger.
The MPs resolved to mobilise other humanitarian organizations to help the people of Teso. The MPs also resolved to meet security organs to talk about the welfare of Teso militia, the Arrow Group. |
