MUKONO - President Yoweri Museveni has said that the elite are the masterminds of corruption in the country and has promised to set up a committee to investigate and prosecute them. To show his resolve to catch them, Mr Museveni used an analogy of someone eating anthrax-infected meat. "If you eat anthrax-infected meat, you cannot survive; and, likewise, people misappropriating government funds will not survive," the President said on October 30 while addressing Movement supporters in Mukono district at Nakifuma county headquarters during the district's Movement Day. Museveni said that the National Resistance Army's first recruits for the bush war were illiterate - which "forced" the Movement to employ the elite to man offices after taking power. "It was a sad situation that although we had military might, we had none amongst our cadres to man all the offices, and when we gave these people power in offices, they started thinking of failing us as if we were fools," Museveni said. He contributed Shs 20 million toward a revolving fund to be set up for lending money - but only to active Movement supporters in the area. "This is not government money, but Movement money that I have raised through my own means," he said. The district LC-V chairman, Mr Godfrey Kyeyune, appealed to Museveni to fulfil his campaign pledge of extending piped water to Mukono town. |
