The army is puzzled by an attack by Karimojong warriors that left more than 50 local defence unit personnel missing without a trace.
The fighting, in which the LDUs were reportedly killed, is said to have taken place in Kabong in Kotido district at the weekend.
But the army spokesman, Maj. Shaban Bantariza, told The Monitor that the attack could have been staged to hand over the guns to the warriors.
"They say they were attacked but where they fought from there was neither blood nor dead bodies," Bantariza said yesterday.
"So we are asking the survivors who turned up with no guns, no wounds how that could have happened," he added.
Out of more than 70 LDUs in the area, only 20 turned up saying their colleagues had been killed.
Said Bantariza: "We did not arrest them as reported but we are questioning them."
