The United Nations undersecretary for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief, Jan Egeland, has urged the Government and the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebels to seek a peaceful resolution to the LRA insurgency.

"I'm here to engage the government and the LRA rebels to find a peaceful solution," he said.

Egeland, who is on a three-day visit to acquaint himself with the plight of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in northern Uganda, was addressing a press conference on his arrival at Entebbe airport yesterday.

"Though it is not easy, the two sides need to come to the table and enter negotiations to end this unnecessarily long conflict", he said.

Egeland said the UN was ready and willing to fund that peace process.

His comments come at the heels of Sigurd Illing's, the head of the delegation of the European Commission. Recently, Illing urged the Ugandan Government to seek an alternative to the military approach to the crisis.

Also, the Dutch minister for development cooperation, Agnes van Ardenne, during her visit to Gulu, advocated a negotiated settlement to the conflict.
