KAMPALA - The new Makerere University chancellor, Professor Apolo Nsibambi, is to be sworn in on tomorrow at the universitys main hall. This will make Nsibambi the first non-head of state chancellor to preside over the universitys graduation. Nsibambi is also the Prime Minister. The Academic Registrar, Sebastian Ngobi, told Sunday Monitor yesterday that the function will start at 3 pm. It will be presided over by the Vice President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya. The Speaker of Parliament, Mr Edward Sekandi, University Council and Senate members and selected MPs will attend the function. About 300 guests are expected to attend. Nsibambi was announced chancellor for the university in a University Council meeting on October 21. His appointment followed the enactment of the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act which stopped the head of state from being the chancellor of all public universities. He took the post after beating Professor Kirya, his former colleague and a lecturer at the same university. |
