The title of the latest beauty pageant, Miss Disability, whose winner was picked in Nairobi last weekend, does not jell with Mukami Maina. Says she: "Or am I the only one who has a problem with it? The dictionary definition of disability is 'a disadvantage or deficiency that interferes with, or prevents, normal achievement in a particular area or something that hinders or incapacitates'. Couldn't the organisers have come up with a better title to emphasise that disability is not inability?"
Adds Njeri Kiarie: "Doesn't this title put the participants in the position of people who are unable to do anything, contrary to what everybody has been preaching? I think 'Miss Able' would have been more appropriate. However, it's a great idea to have such a contest."
The Co-operative Bank's customer care manager, Mrs L.G. Mugaa, sincerely apologises to R. Murage and other customers for interruptions at the bank's ATMs "whenever we undertake housekeeping activities". To avoid this, she says, the work will from now on be done only between 7 pm and 7.20 pm when fewer customers queue at the machines. "We will also soon introduce five more ATMs at strategic locations to improve our services."
