Over 300,000 people have been internally displaced in Lira municipality as a result of insecurity in the sub-counties in the district.

The municipality mayor, Peter Owiny, said this at the opening of the high court criminal session in Lira recently.

He was briefing high court judge Mary Maitum with current influx of internally displaced persons in the municipality.

"We are in despair. The influx is beyond our control," he said.

He said the municipality previously has a population of 90,000 people but the number was increasing due to migrations from the villages.

He said the municipality could not offer to the displaced the basic requi-rments like food, shelter, medical care, and education.

He said they were in fear of an outbreak of cholera due to the congestion and poor hygiene.

Meanwhile, Patrick Opio reports that Pader LC5 chairman Edwin Koma-kech has urged parents to guard their children against abductions by the Joseph Kony rebels.

Komakech was addressing a security meeting at the district headquarters recently.

He said the rebels wanted the youth who are easy to brain wash and indoctrinate into the rebellion.

He encouraged residents to give shelter to displaced orphans.
