Subject: [congokin-tribune] Global
Positioning System (GPS) defined by Uganda Army
Army studying new LRA device By Frank Nyakairu Dec 2,
2003
KAMPALA â The army is studying data from the Global Positioning
System (GPS) recovered recently from the Joseph Kony-led rebels.
The
GPS is a military device, which points out with great precision the exact
location of a person on the globe via satellite.
The army received a
GPS receiver a fortnight ago from a woman who escaped from rebel captivity.
The woman claimed she was a wife to rebel commander Vincent Otti.
The
army believes the GPS was in possession of Otti who is reportedly hiding in
Gulu.
Army spokesman Maj. Shaban Bantariza was cagey when contacted on
Sunday.
âIt is not admissible to say what use we are going to put it
[GPS] to. I would be entering the area of classified operation information,â
Bantariza said.
The GPS is âvery useful and valuable equipment because
if you are like those bandits, you will be able to tell how many kilometers
you are from a UPDF detach,â Bantariza added.
He said the LRAâs
âstrongâ allies in the region supplied the GPS receiver.
There are 24
GPS satellites in the orbit that monitor the earth at 11,000 nautical miles
from above. The satellites transmit signals that can be detected by anyone
with a GPS receiver.
