Rwanda woman charged with smuggling children into AmericaDecember 10, 2003 NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- A 35-year-old Rwandan woman
was indicted Wednesday on a charge of illegally bringing children into the
United States.
A grand jury in U.S. District Court indicted Abiba Kanzayire, a native and citizen of Rwanda. The charge carries up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. She is accused of bringing four minors into the United States between October 2002 and September 2003. Details of the alleged smuggling were not immediately available. "The federal government will investigate and prosecute vigorously individuals who not only ingnore our nation's immigration laws, but traffic in human beings," U.S. Attorney Kevin O'Connor said. The investigation involves several agencies, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the FBI, and Customs and Border Protection. No court or bond information was available.
