COURT - The first deputy Prime Minister, Mr Moses Ali, told court yesterday that he is potent and physically fit.

"I have never been impotent because I have four wives and 30 children," Ali said yesterday.

He was appearing as a witness in a case in which he accuses The Monitor of defamation.

Ali claims that the article, published last year under the headline Diabetic Men More Prone To Impotence, and which carried his photo, portrayed him as sick and impotent.

Ali also told court that as a lieutenant general in the UPDF, he had to be physically fit because he could be deployed to the war front at any time.

However, The Monitor's lawyer, Mr James Nangwala, said the story was simply a scientific opinion, which did not say that Ali was impotent.

Nangwala said he is ready to call a medical doctor to explain the scientific opinion expressed in the article.

The case was adjourned to February 4.
