Lift term limits - VP

KAKIRI - Vice President Gilbert Bukenya says incumbent presidents should not be subjected to term limits.

"If MPs and district chairmen can lead their constituencies as long as they stand, why should we limit presidents?" Mr Bukenya said during an end-of-year party for Movement mobilisers in Makindye division and his staff on Saturday.
The party took place the VP's country home in Kakiri.

"If people still want them, let them lead," he said. The 1995 Constitution provides for a maximum two five-year terms for the President.

However, Cabinet, in its proposals to the Constitutional Review Commission, asked for the limits to be lifted - although the CRC members rejected this proposal in a draft report.

Critics say lifting the term limits might turn an incumbent into a life president.

President Museveni has been ambiguous over whether he will seek another term in office if the limits are lifted.

Bukenya said that the issue should be put to a referendum.
