FURTHER REBEL ATTACKS ON CIVILIANS, FRESH ASSAULT ON ALOI MISSION
General,ÂBrief

There is no let-up in the violence against civilians in north Uganda in the run-up to Christmas: last week rebels of LRA (lordâs Resistance Army) killed at least ten people in an attack near Minaluku, in Apac district 25 kilometres south of Gulu. The news comes from MISNA sources, who say that this is not the only recent assault by the âolumâ (meaning âgrassâ in the local Acholi language): on Sunday the rebels attacked the Catholic mission of Aloi, near the villageof the same name, 18 kilometres northeast of Lira, destroying the dispensary, the residence of the religious sisters and the priestsâ residence. The Parish Priest of Aloi, Father Andrew Okeng, has confirmed the report, saying that fortunately the mission had been evacuated after a rebel incursion in November. However, the LRA did not restrict itself to the mission. The rebels killed two women and a girl in Akura on the road to Apala, and abducted two sons of one of the victims. According to an eyewitness, on this occasion the rebels were commanded by a woman.
