Christmas should spell new hope for Zim FOR the first time in four years Zimbabweans are celebrating Christmas in an environment of peace and tranquillity as political tension dwindles down.Although economic hardships have taken their toll on the rank and file of the population, the situation is not as gloomy as it was during the past couple of years that were marred by violent political rivalry since the 1999 national referendum on the draft constitution. The spirit of Christmas should unite all of us in a brotherly embrace as we share in the joy of the birth of Jesus Christ and the principles he taught, lived by and died for. The past four years have taught us a dear lesson that we should never take for granted the peace, stability and prosperity that we enjoy everyday and that our politics should always be guided by our own national interests first before everything else. It would have been a much nicer Christmas with all the material and commercial trappings of a booming economy had we not sought to destroy the very foundations of our country in order to change the political status quo. This Christmas should give us a chance to reflect on our mistakes and dedicate ourselves to developing our country and economy irrespective of our political affiliations. The adage that "seek ye first the political kingdom and everything else will be added unto you" should be totally discarded as it has cost this country dearly. The belief that all the damage that has been caused by sanctions and economic sabotage can be put right as soon as there is a change in government is nothing but hogwash. It has already been proved beyond doubt that even the most economically powerful countries, with their advanced technology, cannot rebuild a country overnight. The failure by the United States, Britain and Australia to rebuild Iraqs basic infrastructure after destroying it should serve as a warning to us. With all the money in the world, these economic giants are still struggling to put right the damage they have caused to Iraqs economy, society, and politics. As we celebrate Christmas we have every reason to thank God that our country has not been reduced to a ruin although the economic sanctions that some of our people invited are causing a lot of pain and suffering. We should take this time to remind ourselves of the ultimate sacrifice that the Lord Jesus Christ made for the sake of mankind so that we can also exercise tolerance towards each other and embrace each other as brothers not as political opponents. This Christmas should spell new hope for our country and open a new chapter in our journey towards self actualisation as a truly independent nation. It is imperative that we open the coming year with a new sense of pride and values that bind us together as Zimbabweans. As a united country we have the power to overcome whatever problems we are currently facing and the right to determine our own destiny. The biggest Christmas present that will bring smiles on every Zimba-bweans face is the knowledge that land has been given back to its people and it is only a matter of time before the economy starts booming for the benefit of all its citizens. Even though our economy is not doing as well as it should, we can at least hold our heads high with pride this Christmas. The
