KAMPALA The leader of the rebel Lords Resistance Army, Mr Joseph Kony, has moved beyond the red line allowed in accords between Uganda and Sudan, effectively putting him beyond the reach of the UPDF.

The army spokesman, Maj. Shaban Bantariza, said yesterday that Kony is hiding in a place called Nisitu in southern Sudan with about 200 of his fighters.

The LRA has been fighting President Musevenis government since 1988.
In June this year, the vicious rebel group spread its attacks from the north to eastern parts of the country abducting, maiming and killing.

Bantariza was last evening speaking on the popular Andrew Mwenda Live talk show on 93.3 Monitor FM.

He said the UPDF could not reach Kony and that was giving the rebels a chance to reorganise and treat their sick.

Bantariza said that Kony had an overall power force of about 600 fighters both in Uganda and Sudan.

He had been invited to discuss the issue of ghost soldiers in the military.

Several senior officers are currently facing the Military Court Martial after an investigation led by the Minister of Defence Amama Mbabazi implicated them in perpetuating and maintaining ghosts on the army payroll.
