Give it to them straight, no lies about sex

There have been mixed messages this week from the first family. Mrs Janet Museveni now a good will ambassador for safe motherhood (I hear), was giving all the gloomy statistics about the maternal mortality rates.

The statistics we have heard before but if this ambassador is going to accompany her daughter to give birth in Germany at a cost of Shs 180 million in a country where over half the population cant afford a meal a day (ouch!) and then come and preach to us about having concerns on the safety of our mothers we need divine intervention!

Just think how many mothers and children would have been saved with that money. I will always think!

The most interesting messages however came from the main man himself. While closing the 13th annual youth conference at the international conference centre, president Museveni told the youth sex is the most ordinary thing in the world. Even dogs have sex, even cows even butterflies blah, blah, blah.

So if everything is doing it what is the big deal about sex?

His point Say no to pre-marital sex and live; say yes and perish. See When butterflies have sex (The Monitor January 14).

I appreciate President Musevenis constant counselling to the youth about Aids but again sending out negative messages to threaten the youths away from sex wont work very much.

I would rather he got some advice from Straight Talk. Young people need correct information to make the right decisions. They dont need threats.

And we should not debase sex that much it is a good thing that must be respected and if it is with the right person at the right time it is one gift that God gave with all his heart. Just because some people abuse it does not make it filthy.

And we do wrong to assume that everyone has to get married before they can have sex. That is a personal choice not a matter of life and death.

I believe in the marriage institution but I wouldnt advocate for the youth to get married unless it is their choice and if they are 30+.

And I would not assume that they wont have sex but I would tell them to use the formula that has made Uganda famous - ABC Abstain, Be faithful, or use a Condom. None of that says marry.

First it is stupid to advocate for sex after marriage when we know that we still have polygamy in our laws that allows multiple partners for a man.

Why then would a woman be single and safe and die because she is married to a polygamist? Marriage does not make people safe from Aids.

This is the part that no one likes to talk about. If you enjoy sex and you want to remain alive to enjoy it, you have to practice it safely.

As a sexually active person, the number one concern for yourself is your health. If the person you are trying to bed does not want to use protection, then alarm bells should ring in your head.

Yet, many stubborn people refuse to protect themselves, including married ones, just to enjoy those hours of extra sexual delight.

A sexual act can lead to life (children), and can also lead to death (Aids). There is always a problem with screwing people over - unwanted pregnancies, abortions or Aids - there is always a trap.

Young people need that correct information to avoid that trap and enjoy their sex.
