EACH of the former fighters of Taban Amins West Nile Bank Front is to receive a consolidated package of sh500,000, the Amnesty Commissioner has said.
The package includes sh200,000 cash and assorted items which include mattresses, blankets, hoes, pangas and seeds, worth sh300,000.
The commissions in-charge of the West Nile region, Hajji Gganyana Miiro, said on Friday the packages would help the returnees resettle after they complete a six-week orientation programme in Bondo camp.
Most of the 502 ex-combatants are remnants of the Uganda Peoples Democratic Movement formed at the overthrow of Idi Amin in 1979.
They returned under the amnesty law and are currently camped at a transition camp in Mubende. Ends

Rukungiri Poet Ambushes Museveni
THIS: Nyine Bitahwa briefs Museveni at the event By Vision Reporter A local poet recently ambushed President Yoweri Museveni over a two-year-old sh6m pledge. Clad in a bark cloth, Dominic Tibasiima, approached President Museveni at a local exhibition at Ruharo, where he launched poverty eradication programme. Mr. President, kariya akantu kuwandaganise! (Mr President, your promise), he said as Museveni emerged from the crowded stalls. Tibasiima, who recites ebyevugo (poems), told Museveni he has not been paid for his state performances for four years. He said Government officials had frustrated pursuit of the pledge. I have wasted a lot of money on transport to Kampala for over two years without success so today it was a God-given opportunity that I talked to him because I know he will definitely assist, he told The New Vision. Museveni directed the Minister for the Presidency, Kirunda Kivejinja, to take up the issue. Tibasiima said Museveni had promised him a recording machine, a generator and a video camera to found a village theatre. Tibasiima, who said he was a strong Movement supporter, appreciated Museveni for local artistes. He said his adoration for the President and support for the Movement Government was reflected in many of his literary works.
