Kampala Five Karimojong warriors and three Bokora local defence unit(LDU) personnel were recently killed by the UPDF in Kangole trading centre, Moroto district. The UPDF also recovered three guns during the three-hour battle at the UPDF Victor battallion headquarters.

The commandant of the anti-stock theft unit, Lt. Col. John Baptist Mulindwa, said the UPDF and the LDUs had to fight their way out after they were attacked by the warriors.

He blamed some of the local leaders, including district councillors in the area, for inciting the warriors to attack the detachment."Leaders from here are not like their counterparts in Teso region. Instead of assisting the army to fight wrong elements, they gang up with the warriors to attack our units," Mulindwa said.

He said it was meaningless for the Government to spend sh400m every month to pay the Karimojong LDUs when there was no sign that illegal guns were being removed.

He said the taxpayers who shouldered the expense would in future demand accountability for the money spent on the disarmament exercise."I am therefore not going to bend to the wishes of the local leaders. I will use all the weapons at my disposal and where necessary call for reinforcement to ensure that the operation continues," Mulindwa said.

Mulindwa said the UPDF recovered three sub-machine guns during the battle. He said the three LDUs were killed as they tried to cross over to the warrior's side."It is unfortunate they were killed in the cross fire when they yielded to information to join the warriors to fight us," he said.

"The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth becomes the greatest enemy of the state."
