Govt gets Bunyoro land titles

ULC BOSS: Mayanja Nkangi

The Uganda Land Commission (ULC) has acquired from Baganda landlords 130 title deeds for Bunyoro land which is under controversy in Kibaale district, reports Ann Mugisa.

The Government, according to Mubende-Bunyoro Committee, is to distribute the land to qualifying people of Kibaale district.

The Mubende-Bunyoro Committee said in a statement that sh410m had been spent on purchasing the titles from the absentee landlords.

It said about 3,870 other title deeds to be purchased at sh1.6bn are held by absentee landlords.

The committee statement said that ULC chairman, Mayanja Nkangi, and the chairman of the National Land Task Force announced last week that the distribution would start in July.

Quoting the commissioner for land registration, the committee said illegal settlers would have to be relocated to other parts of the country.

According to the commissioner, people who were taken to Kibaale after eviction from Mpokya ! ! are to benefit, but those that they invited later and others who have been illegally migrating to Kibaale would be resettled elsewhere in the country.

I wonder: is there a law in Uganda that makes it illegal for the Baganda to own land in other parts of Uganda while allowing non-Baganda to own any amount of land in Buganda?
