FURTHER REBEL ATTACKS IN NORTHERN DISTRICTS
General,ÂBrief

At least 12 people were killed and dozens more injured in an attack by the rebels of LRA (lordâs Resistance Army) on the refugee camp of Abia, 28 kilometres north of Lira in northern Uganda, yesterday afternoon, MISNA sources have said. Survivors report that the rebels, who numbered at least 300, outnumbered the government soldiers stationed in the camp, who were forced to pull back.

Father Giulio Albanese, MISNAâs editor, who is currently visiting his Comboni brothers at the mission in Lira, has confirmed the news. Instead, last night the rebels led by Joseph Kony attacked villages around the town of Apala, eight kilometres north of the Comboni mission of Ngeta, looting homes and shops.

There are no reports of victims, as the local Lango people spend the night on the nearby Erute mountain, where they receive protection from a large garrison of government soldiers. Meanwhile, MISNA sources have reported that the LRA ambushed a vehicle carrying civilian passengers in Aparo, on the road linking Kitgum with the Catholic mission of Namokora, on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident reportedly took place at 17.00 local time, 15 kilometres east of Kitgum. A child was killed when the vehicle overturned, while an unknown number of passengers were injured. The sound of automatic weapon fire attracted the attention of a nearby government patrol; on arriving on the scene, the regular troops returned the rebel fire, killing one.[LC]

"The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth becomes the greatest enemy of the state."

- Dr. Joseph M. Goebbels - Hitler's propaganda minister
