Soldiers need pension too
I request the concerned authorities at UPDF General Headquarters in Bombo to clarify on the terms and conditions of retirement and promotions in the army.
Many officers and men have continued to be laid off from the service without a proper send off in terms of benefits, unlike in other institutions.
Currently in the UPDF, an officer/man who opts to go back to civilian life is described as "non effective", which to most of us means "expired." One is paid only three months' salary and sent home.
Is that the professionalisation politicians sing about day and night? We also need to live a decent life after our voluntary service in the forces. How long should a soldier serve in order to be entitled to pension?
My view is that an officer who has served for over 15 years and wishes to retire should be allowed to apply for retirement and a good package should be given.
Name withheld on request.
MR. Name withheld,
You must be from the wrong tribe. More still, you might be just a mere Lance corporal whose name nobody knows.
You only get send of retirement "packages" if you are omwana wa gundi" from the right area .....(.If you know what I mean).
Moreover, with all this "ghost soldiers" corruption story we hear about within the UPDF, some "affende" might have declared you a "ghost", and then proceeded to collect your "cut" ( package) from the powers that be and eat it!

"The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth becomes the greatest enemy of the state."
