300 LDUs to fight rustlers

SIRONKO - A 300 man strong local defense unit force will be trained to fight Karimojong cattle rustlers here. "In an effort to prevent armed Karimojong cattle raids that have been plaguing this district, we have agreed with the third division commander that 300 LDUs be trained to offer security and help bar off the Karimojong raids," Mr Kamara Bayeye said on Tuesday.

Bayeye is the resident district commissioner of Sironko. Bayeye announced the move while speaking to the district council at Sironko headquarters.He said he met the third division commander and they agreed that the LDUs be trained and constituted into a battalion with a base at Katta in Bunambutye.

He said the three months training begins, Sunday.After training, he said, the LDUs will get uniforms and will be entitled to a monthly allowance.The RDC is spearheading the recruitment drive, which is targeting the youth.
The rustlers enter Sironko mainly through Bunambutye.
