Political coalition is the way forward

Listening to Movement supporters in talk shows, and reading some of their opinions in the print media, you get the impression that the much-anticipated merger between political parties and the existing political pressure groups is a disaster. That of course is a wrong impression.

It is diversionary for anyone to say that UPC and DP cannot work together. It is also diversionary to refer to the Kabaka Yekka alliance to try to undermine the attempts by political forces opposed to the Movement to form a coalition.

Let us face it. The urgent issue right now is how to show the regime that has crippled democracy in this country the exit. A coalition is about establishing a government that will take the country to the right democratic path and restore the rule of law.

It is not about taking advantage of each other. It is about realising the importance of each other in the struggle to reclaim democracy. Instead of diverting attention, Ugandans should instead guide parties on the modalities to ensure cohesion in the coalition and how to establish a government of national unity thereafter.

"The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth becomes the greatest enemy of the state."

- Dr. Joseph M. Goebbels - Hitler's propaganda minister
