Uganda is now 'hell of Africa'

What else remains for Ugandans to be proud of, when people calling themselves human beings (and Ugandans) can find satisfaction in what happened in Lira last Saturday? Almost 200 people massacred!

A friend of mine has just asked me whether Uganda is still worthy of being named "the pearl of Africa". However, considering what happened in Lira, with all the love I have for my country, I feel that the title, "Hell of Africa" would rather fit for Uganda, at least for the moment.

As I think over the recent events in the North, two questions remain unanswered.First: How many more people should die before our government seeks direct help from the international community? After almost 20 years of conflict, our leaders should be humble and realistic enough to seek international help.( that is a far cry...latest Mbabazi says he is going to catch "KONY")

Second: I always support peaceful solutions to conflicts.

However, considering what [Joseph] Kony and his friends are doing, I ask myself whether these people still possess their mental faculties. Is Kony capable of reasoning as do real human beings? Is he capable of understanding should one speak to him about peace? The intervention of the international community should be sought for in a serious way. Kony and his men should be arrested by all means and tried for crimes against humanity. With what is happening in the North, no Ugandan of goodwill can in all sincerity continue chanting: "we now sleep".

"The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth becomes the greatest enemy of the state."
