EU pays the piper; has to call the tune

I refer to the article, EU Envoy Very Much Out Of Order (The Monitor, March 2) in which Mr Kintu Nyago criticised the EU Head of Delegation in Uganda, Sigurd Illing, for his suggestion that the Government should enter talks with the rebels in northern Uganda.

Much as we all know that Uganda is a sovereign state, we also know that this war has dragged on for far too long, causing untold suffering to our brothers and sisters in this region.Kintu says that Ugandans know how best to tackle this problem.

Now, I will ask: Would Kintu say the same if he were directly affected by this war; being on the run all the time and fearing for his life every second that passes by? Would he say the same if his children were always faced with the risk of being abducted or being maimed? Most of us know that Kony is a terrible criminal, but I think it is also important that we put into consideration the ideas of others who come to help us overcome this problem.

At the moment, it is not important who will end the war; what is important is to end it. Kintu should also know that as long as we still go to the EU to ask for funds which finance the war, these people will always have a say on how their monies are being used.

The EU is tired of this war and that is why they are also coming up with possible solutions.I urge Ugandans to show more support for the innocent civilians in the North. Let us go to the streets and show solidarity with the civilians in northern Uganda. Let us not let them feel forgotten and forsaken by their countrymen and women.

"The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth becomes the greatest enemy of the state."

- Dr. Joseph M. Goebbels - Hitler's propaganda minister
