Three charged with treason

KAMPALA â Three men, including a soldier attached to the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence, were yesterday charged with treason and misprison of treason.Buganda Road Grade One Magistrate Emmanuel Baguma remanded the three â Ismail Juuko, Twaha Kakande and Abdu Mwebe Lukwebe â to Luzira.The charges were read out to the accused persons but they were not allowed to enter any plea because their offence is of a capital nature only triable by the High Court.
The three were jointly charged with Fred Musubako Zake, Rashid Khamis Tulimukabi, Musa Abubakari, and Hajara Nabagereka.The suspects were arrested on Monday together with the former Mufti of Uganda, Sheik Obed Kamulegeya, for alleged subversion.They were accused of recruiting rebels, mobilising logistical support and intelligence information for the rebel Allied Democratic Forces.
They allegedly recruited persons into ADF ranks and sent them to the DR Congo for training.They were also accused of failing to report to the relevant authority the plot to overthrow the government of Uganda.
Prosecution alleges that all the accused persons committed the offence between July 2003 and March 2004 in different parts of Uganda including Busia, Iganga, Kampala, Bugiri and Kasese.
