DP bosses learn new tricks

wicked whispers: By A Special Correspondent

May be the beatings the Democratic Party (DP) members have received these days courtesy of Police have taught them to be disaster prepared. On March 25, the chairman of the DP parliamentary caucus Mr Wadri Kasiano (Terego) addressed a news conference in the corridors of Parliament. He read out a two-page statement.

But as Kasiano was going about his business, the Makindye East MP Mike Mabikke, who is the caucus secretary watched his colleague from afar. He stood near the lift as if he wanted to run away. '

Do not hurry to sympathize with them; it was tactical. The MPs were trying to dodge the cameras since their news statement was hitting party leader Dr. Paul Ssemogerere. The Mabikkes wanted only Kasiano to be filmed.

Actually they were announcing that they would not be party to the March 27 ceremony at which the Ssemogerere leadership was launching a drive to build the old organisation a decent office.

These DP people are really funny. Can you imagine that Kyadondo South MP, his excellency, sorry Hon Isa Kikungwe participated in organizing a ceremony that he later agreed to boycott.

He was seen in the company of the organizers up to late Friday. He even paid for the printing of the cards and pledged half a million shillings which was announced by the treasurer Mr Ssebaana Kizito.

But sources now say, that actually the MP had made the pledge several weeks before, and the Ssemogerere group just wanted to show that some of the MPs were with them.

In fact the Masaka Municipality MP Mr John Kawanga, a relative of the DP chief denounced his colleague's decision on radio and showed up at the function in Mengo.

You know the Shs 200 million piece of land DP bought for its offices is just near His Majesty Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi's palace at Mengo. I do not know whether being close to Kabaka's main palace gives DP any political mileage. I am not a politician and I actually do not know how those politicians calculate their things.

But it would have been better for DP to have their offices in the city centre for purposes of mobility. Anyway a big showdown between the DP caucus and the Ssemogerere group is likely. Watch this space.
