Cheeye ordered to pay Shs 15m

COURT � The High Court has ordered Mr Teddy Ssezi Cheeye to pay Shs 15 million to Justice Edmund Lugayizi. Cheeye lost a defamation suit on April 2. Justice Lugayizi, also of the High Court, sued Cheeye, then editor-in-chief of Uganda Confidential newsletter, for publishing a defamatory article about him in 2001. Justice Gideon Tinyinondi ruled in favour of Lugayizi. �On the law and evidence before me I hold that the two articles complained of by the plaintiff were capable of conveying nothing but defamation,� he said in his ruling. He ordered Cheeye, now with ISO, to pay Shs 15 million in damages to Lugayizi as well as interests and costs of the suit. |
