COURT The Uganda Human Rights Tribunal has summoned Water, Lands and Environment minister, Col. Kahinda Otafiire, over a child-support suit. Commissioner Mariam Wangadya wants Otafiire to appear by April 19, to show why his salary should not be attached to recover money to cater for two children said to be his. This follows an application filed by the mother of the children, Ms Atukunda, to the tribunal to have the ministers salary withheld. Atukunda, a primary school teacher in Mbarara, dragged Otafiire to the tribunal last year, claiming that the minister had refused to take care of their two children, aged 6 and 2. The tribunal ruled in her favour and ordered the minister to pay her Shs 1.8 million annually for the childrens maintenance. This years money was to be paid in two instalments, with the first batch of Shs 900,000 due by February 16. Atukunda returned to court to have the ministers salary attached after Otafiire allegedly refused to pay up. |
