Wamala decries Police violence

PEACE UNTO YOU: Wamala delivering his Easter message

By Josephine Maseruka

Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala has criticised the Police for breaking up peaceful political rallies and meetings.
There are good laws to that effect and if such meetings and rallies are peaceful it is wrong for the police to use force without respecting human dignity, he said.

Delivering his Easter message at his Rubaga residence yesterday morning, Wamala (right) expressed concern over the escalating violence.
There is violence and torture at various levels in our society - physical, psychological, domestic, structural and even to nature itself, he said.

Wamala, who was responding to questions from journalists on harassment and torture inflicted on people especially at political rallies and meetings, urged the international community to help end the northern war before it turned into a genocide.

Wamala said the fruits of Jesus resurrection - freedom, peace and joy - were not visible in Uganda because of the unfol ding culture of violence.
We are becoming a violent people, he said.

Wamala hinted on the possibility of a genocide if the international community did not help end the Kony war.
There was genocide in Rwanda and the international community watched. Are we to wait for the genocide as was the case in Rwanda? Let them intervene to end the northern insurgency caused by Joseph Kony, he said.

The atrocities committed in northern and eastern Uganda have greatly marred Ugandas image abroad, he said.
Wamala blamed the February Barlonyo killings and government failure to determine the exact number of people who died there.
