China and Saudi Arabia have a host of jobs for Ugandan English teachers, a government
minister has confirmed.

The minister of Labour, Gender and Social Development, Zoe Bakoko Bakoru told The
Monitor yesterday that several countries have vacancies for Ugandan teachers jobs.

Bakoko however, says that African Labour ministers are still drafting a law to protect
their workers once they go abroad.

"We don't want our people to suffer when they go there [abroad] and work as slaves,"
Bakoko told The Monitor by telephone.

"We don't want our people to be mistreated," she added.

She said that Ugandan English teachers are on high demand in China.

Sources who declined to be named told The Monitor that Saudi Arabia has asked for
about 400 teachers.

The secretary general of the National Organisation of Trade Unions (NOTU), Lyelmoi
Otong Ongaba told MPs on April 15 that Saudi Arabia has formally put in a request to
government.

"The Arabs are asking us for teachers they desperately need teachers" he said.

However, Bakoko declined to reveal the total number of teachers required.

"I don't want to speculate I have to cross check with my Permanent Secretary," Bakoko
said.

Thousands of teachers graduate every year with no hopes of getting jobs. Recently the
Education Service Commission advertised 1,500 vacancies and over 15,000 applied for
the jobs.
