As the world marked the World Press Freedom Day on May 3, the UN listed the story of
the conflict in Northern Uganda top on the agenda of issues that needed to be
highlighted by local and international media.
A statement from the UN department of public information on Monday said the Ugandan
story was top among a new initiative by the organisation known as "Ten Stories the
World Should Hear More About."
Christian Botswain, Political Affairs Officer, UN Department of Political Affairs said
the purpose for making such a list was "to shine a spotlight on some of the important
international issues and developments that often do not get sufficient media
attention."
In addition to the Ugandan story, the list includes a number of humanitarian
emergencies, as well as conflict or post-conflict situations and spans other matters
of concern to the UN.
According to the UN, the highlights of the Ugandan story run thus: "With an armed
rebellion threatening to undermine Uganda's progress to development, child soldiers
emerge amid deadly violence and growing humanitarian emergency.
